Scoping study and project document for positioning Ras Al Khaimah as a sustainable tourism destination

We compiled a report following a week-long visit to RAK, facilitated by Ras Al Khaimah Tourism Development Authority (RAKTDA).  Aspects addressed in the report include an overview of toursm planning and performance of RAK, the rationale for positioning RAK as a sustainable tourism destination, overview of approaches and systems for planning, implementing and monitoring sustainable tourism, a strategy for formulating a sustainable tourism plan for RAK and detailed proposals regarding expertise required and costs of formulating such a plan. The project document provides a clear direction for more detailed future planning of sustainable tourism in RAK.  The study entailed site visits to all key tourism sites in RAK, including the coastal cluster of Al Marjan Island, Al Hamrah and Mina Al Arab; RAK old city; Jebel Jais and the zipline under construction; Khatt Springs hot water spa; and the desert area of Wadi Kadija.  In addition in-depth interviews were held with a range of public and private sector stakeholders including  RAK Hospitality Group, Al Hamrah Group, RAK Municipality, Dept of Public Works, Dept of Economic Development, Dept Antiquities and Museums and others. Desk research was conducted to provide guidance regarding the latest schemes and concepts in support of Sustainable Tourism.
